About Matt Ellis · Founder, Be A Best Boss™

I Didn’t Set Out to Build a Leadership Company.

I set out to answer a question.

Why do some bosses bring out the best in people while others make them dread Mondays and live for Fridays?

That question started long before my career.

I grew up in a small town in northwestern Pennsylvania. My mom drove a forklift. My dad worked in maintenance. Neither had an executive title, but both had something that shaped our family every day—a boss.

Some days they came home energized. Other days they came home carrying something that had nothing to do with the work itself and everything to do with how they had been treated.

Then my dad got a new boss.

Everything changed.

His confidence grew. His energy returned. He talked about work again. One day he came home and said four words I’ve never forgotten:

“He believes in me.”

Those four words planted a question I’ve been pursuing ever since.

Thirty Years Looking for the Answer

Over the next three decades I worked in sales, operations, marketing, HR, organizational development, and executive leadership.

Everywhere I went I kept seeing the same pattern.

Organizations invested heavily in leadership development.

Managers attended training.

Books were handed out.

Kickoff events came and went.

Yet the everyday experience of employees often stayed exactly the same.

Then I had the opportunity to work alongside leaders who were willing to question conventional thinking, experiment with new ideas, and keep refining what worked.

Together, we focused less on leadership events and more on the everyday experiences employees were having with their managers. Over time, those experiments transformed our culture and led our organization to earn the Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award.

That experience convinced me that meaningful leadership transformation wasn’t just possible—it was repeatable.

The challenge became understanding why it worked well enough that other organizations could achieve the same kind of lasting change.

That question became Be A Best Boss™.

What I Believe

I believe leadership happens in moments.

The conversations.

The corrections.

The recognition.

The questions.

The decisions.

Those moments shape the conditions people experience at work.

Those conditions shape who people become.

And who people become ultimately drives results.

That’s why I don’t believe the greatest result of leadership is what people accomplish for us.

I believe it’s who people become because of us.

Why Be A Best Boss™

Be A Best Boss™ exists to help organizations build better bosses—not through one-time events, but by helping leaders recognize and leverage the moments they already experience every day.

The goal isn’t better leadership training.

The goal is better human experiences at work.

Because when people experience better leadership, they become more than they thought possible.

And when people become more, organizations achieve more.

That’s what Be A Best Boss™ is all about.
